Wine from the Savoie

The Savoie has its own, lesser-known wines — fresh mountain wines you taste on a day trip to the vineyards in the valleys.

Wine from the Savoie

The French Alps are famous for cheese and mountains, but Savoie also has its own wine. It is a smaller, lesser-known wine region than the great French areas, but that is precisely its charm: fresh white wines and a typical red grape, made on the slopes of the mountain valleys. A day of wine tasting is a lovely change from hiking and skiing around our chalet in Entremont.

A mountain wine region of its own

The Vins de Savoie grow mainly on the sunny slopes in the valleys, with the mountains as a backdrop. It is not a world-famous prestige region, but the wines are fresh and honest and pair perfectly with Savoyard cuisine. The largest vineyards lie in the Combe de Savoie and around Chambéry — a day trip from the chalet.

The Route des Vignobles de Savoie

The best way to discover the vineyards is along the Route des Vignobles de Savoie, a wine route of almost 170 kilometres running from Aix-les-Bains to the Maurienne, passing the villages of Apremont, Chignin and Arbin along the way. You drive at your own pace past cellars and tasting rooms. Find more information at vin-de-savoie.fr.

Fresh white wines

The vast majority of Savoyard wine is white and light, ideal with a fondue, raclette or a piece of Reblochon. The best known come from villages such as Apremont and Chignin, made from local grapes you rarely encounter elsewhere.

The red Mondeuse

Besides white, Savoie also has its own red grape: the Mondeuse, with a spicy, peppery character. It is the region's signature red wine, especially around the village of Arbin.

Practical

A tour of the cellars of the Combe de Savoie takes you about a day. Many winemakers welcome visitors for a tasting (often for a small fee); it is best to book in advance. As the driver, let someone else drive or taste in moderation.
