Mondeuse: the red wine of the Savoie
The local red grape of the Savoie — spicy and peppery, the signature red wine of the Alps.

Anyone who thinks Savoie only makes white wine is forgetting the Mondeuse. This local red grape gives the typical red wine of the French Alps: spicy, with a recognisable peppery character. A fine discovery during a wine trip from our chalet in Entremont.
A red grape of its own
The Mondeuse has been grown in Savoie for centuries and is closely tied to the region. The wines are usually supple and fresh, with notes of red fruit and pepper. It is not a heavy, powerful red wine, but rather a lively, distinctive style.
Arbin, the village of the Mondeuse
The Mondeuse grows mainly in the Combe de Savoie, on the clay and limestone slopes around the village of Arbin — the name to know for this red wine. The semi-underground cellars with their thick walls provide a stable temperature in which the Mondeuse ages quietly.
On the wine route
Arbin lies on the Route des Vignobles de Savoie, together with Apremont and Chignin. Many winemakers welcome visitors for a tasting; it is best to book in advance. This way you can combine the red Mondeuse with the white Vins de Savoie in a single day.
At the Savoyard table
A glass of Mondeuse goes well with charcuterie, grilled meat and hearty mountain dishes. Combine it with the regional dishes of the Aravis.
