Plateau des Glières: nature and history

About half an hour's drive from our chalet in Entremont lies the Plateau des Glières, a vast and silent high plateau at around 1,400 metres. It is a beloved destination for those who seek the peace and space of the mountains — and at the same time a place with an impressive history.

A vast high plateau

Where most Alpine landscapes are steep and rugged, the Plateau des Glières stretches out broad and open. Vast meadows, forests and grazing herds give it a serene atmosphere, surrounded by the peaks of the Bornes massif.

Hiking in summer

In summer the plateau is a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers. Flat, broad paths also make it ideal for families with children or a quiet outing. From the edges of the plateau you have sweeping views over the surrounding mountains.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing

In winter the Plateau des Glières turns into one of the most beautiful cross-country areas of the region, with kilometres of groomed trails. Snowshoe walkers also get their fill here, far from the crowds of the pistes.

Monument to the resistance

The plateau played an important role in the Second World War: here a group of the French resistance, the Maquis des Glières, gathered. In their memory stands an impressive modern monument by sculptor Émile Gilioli. A visit makes the history of the region tangible.

A day on the Glières

On the plateau you will find a few farms and chalets where you can taste regional produce and a simple meal — a real Reblochon from the farmer tastes best here. It is a fine place to spend an entire day.
