Lake Annecy

One of the purest lakes in France and the fairytale town of Annecy, just half an hour's drive away.

Lake Annecy

Lake Annecy lies just half an hour's drive from Entremont and is one of the most beautiful destinations in the wider area. It is known as one of the purest lakes in Europe, with crystal-clear, emerald-green water in which you can swim wonderfully. Majestically set among the snow-capped peaks, it is also the second-largest natural lake lying entirely within France — an essential outing during your stay in the Aravis.

The purest lake in Europe

That crystal-clear water is no coincidence. Since the 1960s a strict environmental policy has applied around the lake: the wastewater of all surrounding municipalities is channelled around the lake instead of into it. As a result, Lac d'Annecy is often called the cleanest lake in Europe, with visibility in many places reaching deep below the water's surface.

Swimming at the beaches

In summer you can swim wonderfully from the many beaches around the lake. Some are free and natural, others are laid-out plages with lawns, playgrounds and refreshments. Popular spots are the Plage d'Albigny in Annecy and the large beaches at Doussard and Saint-Jorioz on the south side. The water warms pleasantly in summer, ideal for a refreshing dip after a warm day.

Watersports on the water

The lake is a true paradise for watersports enthusiasts. You can sail, paddleboard, kayak, water-ski or rent an electric boat to explore the lake yourself. Those who prefer to sit back can board one of the cruise boats that call at the most beautiful bays and villages. From the water you see the mountains and castles from a completely different perspective.

Around the lake by bike

One of the most beautiful ways to discover the lake is by bike. Along an old railway line runs a car-free cycle path, the Voie Verte, which in around forty kilometres leads almost entirely around the water — from Annecy via Veyrier-du-Lac and Talloires to Doussard on the south side. Flat, shady and with a different view of the lake at every turn: ideal for young and old, with plenty of terraces along the way to take a break.

Annecy, the Venice of the Alps

A visit to the lake naturally combines with the historic little town of Annecy, not for nothing called the 'Venice of the Alps'. Stroll through the photogenic streets of the old town, past colourful houses and the Thiou river and canals that flow through the centre, with cheerful flower boxes everywhere. Admire the Palais de l'Île, the iconic building in the middle of the water, and walk across the romantic Pont des Amours.

Castles around the water

Around the lake stand fairytale castles. The Château d'Annecy towers high above the town, while the castle of Duingt sits picturesquely on the shore. The best known is the castle of Menthon-Saint-Bernard, in the hands of the same family since the fourteenth century. The story goes that Walt Disney was partly inspired by it for the fairytale castle of Sleeping Beauty — well worth a visit.

Paragliding over the lake

From the Col de la Forclaz, high above the southern end near Doussard, colourful wings take off throughout the season. Paragliding over Lake Annecy is considered one of the most beautiful flights in Europe: you glide over the emerald-green water with the Alps all around you. Even as a beginner you can make a tandem flight under the guidance of an experienced pilot.

Gastronomy and markets

Annecy is also a culinary destination. At the atmospheric market in the old town you will find local cheeses, charcuterie and fresh regional produce. In the restaurants you taste specialities such as omble chevalier and féra, two fine fish from the lake, often served with a view of the water.
