Gorges du Fier & Château de Montrottier

A short distance from Annecy, about three quarters of an hour's drive from our chalet in Entremont, lies one of the most beautiful natural sights in the region: the Gorges du Fier. This narrow, deep gorge has been carved out of the rock by the river Fier over thousands of years.

The gorge of the Fier

Here the Fier has cut a narrow cleft into the rock, with walls in places tens of metres high and only a few metres apart. The water churns far below you while the light filters through the narrow opening — an impressive and cool spectacle, especially on a warm day.

Along the walkway

A nineteenth-century iron walkway is anchored into the rock face and carries you safely above the water through the whole gorge. Along the way you see jagged rock formations and the so-called 'giant's kettles' that the swirling water has carved out.

Château de Montrottier

Right beside the gorge stands the medieval Château de Montrottier, with an impressive keep and a rich collection of art and curiosities. The combination of gorge and castle makes for a complete and varied day out.

Combining with Annecy

The Gorges du Fier lie close to Annecy and the lake of Annecy. A visit to the gorge in the morning and the town or the lake in the afternoon is an ideal combination.

Practical

The Gorges du Fier are usually open from spring to autumn. The walkway is easy to negotiate, even with children, although it is not suitable for pushchairs. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a jacket — it is considerably cooler in the gorge.

From Entremont

Thanks to the short distance, you can easily combine the gorge with other outings in the area. In the evening you come home to the chalet. Check the available dates.
