Geneva: city on the lake

The international Swiss city of Geneva with its lake, jet d'eau and old town, about an hour's drive away.

Geneva: city on the lake

About an hour's drive from our chalet in Entremont lies Geneva, the international Swiss city on the shore of Lake Geneva. For anyone who fancies visiting a large city during a stay in the Aravis — or who arrives at its airport — Geneva is a surprisingly varied destination.

The jet d'eau and the lake

The symbol of Geneva is the jet d'eau, a fountain that shoots water 140 metres into the air. Along the shores of the lake you stroll through parks, past flower clocks and little boats, with the mountains in the background.

The old town

Geneva's Vieille Ville climbs up a hill, with cobbled streets, antique shops and little squares. The highlight is the Saint-Pierre Cathedral, whose tower you can climb for a sweeping view over the city and the lake.

International Geneva

Geneva is home to countless international organisations, including the European headquarters of the United Nations and the Red Cross. The Palais des Nations and its accompanying museum offer a fascinating glimpse into world politics.

Shopping and watches

The city is known for its luxury and its timepieces. In the smart shopping streets you'll find the major Swiss watch brands, chocolatiers and boutiques — ideal for combining a day of culture and shopping.

Practical: border and airport

Geneva sits right on the French border and has an international airport, which makes it a handy arrival point for anyone travelling to the Aravis by plane. From here you drive to the chalet in about an hour.
