Castles around the lake of Annecy
Fairytale castles on and above the lake, including the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle.

The area around the lake of Annecy, half an hour's drive from our chalet in Entremont, is full of fairytale castles. A castle route along the water is a wonderful outing, also for those who love history and fine views.
Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard
The best-known castle is that of Menthon-Saint-Bernard, which with its turrets rises high above the lake. It has been in the hands of the same family since the fourteenth century, and the story goes that Walt Disney was inspired by it for the castle of Sleeping Beauty.
Château de Duingt
On the south side of the lake lies the picturesque Château de Duingt, on a headland that almost divides the lake in two. It is one of the most photographed spots on the whole lake, especially from the water.
Château d'Annecy
In the heart of the town of Annecy the Château d'Annecy rises above the rooftops. The former residence of the counts of Geneva and Savoy now houses a museum and offers a wonderful view over the old town and the lake.
Château de Montrottier
A little further, near the Gorges du Fier, stands the medieval Château de Montrottier with its impressive keep and a surprising collection of art and curiosities. A gorge and a castle in one outing.
A castle route along the lake
The castles are spread out around the lake of Annecy in such a way that you can turn them into a beautiful route, perhaps combined with a bike ride along the Voie Verte or a boat trip on the water.
